SYSTEM: A Novel Approach to Furniture Design

DAZINGFEELSGOOD Transforms Conceptual Art into Functional Design

Exploring the intersection of art and design, DAZINGFEELSGOOD presents SYSTEM, a set of three-dimensional objects inspired by American artist Sol LeWitt's Wall Drawings. This innovative design project challenges traditional principles and offers a unique interpretation of furniture as an art form.

SYSTEM is a collection of objects made from tubular solid stainless steel, crafted with precision and finished in a powder coating treatment. The collection includes three tables of varying heights, designed to overlap or function individually. The design's unique properties lie in its versatility and its ability to transform from functional furniture into a standalone objet d’art.

The creation process of SYSTEM involved the use of tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding methods, demonstrating the brand's commitment to craftsmanship and quality. The technical specifications of the tables are meticulously detailed, with each table designed to synchronize with one another proportionately at heights of 340, 370, and 400mm.

SYSTEM was conceived in March 2016 in Singapore for the annual design event SingaPlural. It has since been exhibited in several local events, including ArtStage Singapore 2017 and Design District Dialogue 2018, and is currently consigned with The Artling.

The design draws its inspiration from Conceptual Art, particularly the works of Sol Lewitt, which narrate about instructional and systematic practice in creating art form. This led to a dialogue on the idea of design being conscious in intent, and how design can be deconstructed to derive a level of novelty besides its dominant principles.

The production of SYSTEM presented several challenges, particularly in achieving precision in the welding process. The design's simplicity and clarity required a high level of accuracy and consistency, with a slight deviation resulting in a drastic visual effect. Despite these challenges, DAZINGFEELSGOOD was able to create a design that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

SYSTEM's innovative approach to furniture design has been recognized with a Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2019. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
